Paper & Board Application

As the price of CO2 laser cutting machines has dropped in recent years, the use of lasers to mark or cut paper and board has become a popular process. Whether it is art paper, ivory board, whiteboard, corrugated board, or kraft paper, laser marking, and cutting is efficient and sharp and is therefore used in a wide range of applications for packaging all kinds of home appliances, consumer electronics, and consumer goods. In addition, the automotive and machinery industries have begun to use laser labels in place of traditional dot peen markings.

What Should You Know About Paper & Board Laser Marking or Engraving?

Paper & Board2

With the need for flexible production and small batch customization by brands and manufacturers in various industries, the use of CO2 lasers for cutting and marking paper boxes has become popular in recent years. While cutting alone is usually done with a cutter, scanning with a galvanometer allows one-stop cutting and marking, even in automated packaging lines.

The use of UV lasers for monochrome, high-contrast marking on paperboard cartons as an alternative to traditional inkjet printing is already being used by some consumer electronics brands and is of great interest to some customers in the white goods industry, where the use of this technology can dramatically reduce the cost of ink cartridges and other consumables in high-volume production and reduce the environmental impact to improve sustainability.

It is easy for some customers to confuse certain laminates with regular paper, such as plastic-backed labels like PVC, PET, or coated thermal papers like CVL. Some brands, such as 3M, have developed and marketed laser labels for laser marking. These materials are typically marked using UV and fiber lasers and can be viewed on our Plastics & Rubber page based on face material or coating composition.
