Application of Laser in Leather Processing

From inexpensive pig and kangaroo leathers, to the most popular cow and sheep leathers, to the more valuable crocodile, deer and snake leathers, the use of lasers is now commonplace in the processing of leather products, from small creative runs to large mass production. Whether it is a galvanic laser marker or a common Гравер CO2-лазер, the task of marking, engraving or cutting leather can be accomplished in an aesthetically pleasing manner. Artificial leather, whether PVC, PU, PE, PA or microfiber, is essentially a plastic, see our Plastics and Rubber page for more information on these applications.

In recent years, we have increasingly used UV laser marking machines for leather processing. The 355nm wavelength of the UV laser is shorter than the 10600nm wavelength of the CO2 laser, producing a smaller spot with a shorter pulse duration and therefore more concentrated energy. The UV laser produces cleaner black marks on the leather surface, finer engraved or cut edges, and the ability to engrave or cut finer line patterns and text.

In addition, the Galvanometer UV laser marking machine eliminates the need to clean, soak and mask the leather, whether you have a limited number of parts or a large production run, and allows you to choose a machine format that fits your needs, such as a small tabletop model or an in-line flying model, reducing additional space requirements and adjustments to the production line.

In addition to marking, the use of lasers to punch holes in leather is a more subtle but stable requirement. CO2 lasers are the mainstay of this application, with high processing efficiency and excellent visualization, and are widely used for perforating automotive ventilated seats, luxury luggage, leather garments, shoes and other products. These CO2 lasers are usually 3D galvanometer scanning systems rather than cutting machines to cover the marking and engraving of other materials such as plastics, textile fabrics, etc. within their industry.

Some automotive ventilated seats are now being perforated with UV laser systems instead of CO2 laser systems. The shorter pulse duration and higher energy of the UV laser produces a burnt-free perforation with a smaller spot size, allowing holes as small as 0.3mm in diameter, and as small as 3μm with the high speed picosecond UV laser. The use of UV lasers allows for low visibility perforations and makes it easier to adjust the density of the perforation to better distinguish different areas of the required perforation.
